Speaking at a school board meeting

How public comment works, what to say in two minutes, and how to follow up. Rules vary by district, so check yours first.

01Sign up to speak

Most boards set aside time for public comment at regular meetings. Check the agenda and the district website for the sign-up deadline, the time limit for each speaker, and whether written comments are accepted.

02What to say in two minutes

Two minutes is about 250 words at a calm pace. Keep to one ask.

  1. Who you are (10 seconds)
  2. Your ask, stated once (15 seconds)
  3. What you’ve seen locally (30 seconds)
  4. One piece of evidence, stated honestly (30 seconds)
  5. What other districts have done, then thanks (30 seconds)

03Bring the research

Bring printed copies of our one-page research briefs for each board member. The board secretary or clerk can usually pass them along.

04Speak early, and share the stage

Speak at the committee stage when you can. By the second reading, most decisions are already made.

Rotate speakers across meetings. Different parents at several meetings show the board how many families care.

05Keep the tone right

Keep a curious, respectful tone. Teachers are allies, and most have no say over technology mandates.

06Follow up

Within a few days, email the whole board. Thank them, restate your ask in a sentence or two, and attach anything you referred to.
