Subject: Request from [school] parents: classroom technology in the early grades

Dear Chair [name] and members of the [District name] School Board,

My name is [name], and I'm the parent of [a child / children] in [grade(s)] at [school]. I'm writing on behalf of [myself / a group of [number] parents in the district].

We're asking the board to review how devices are used in our elementary classrooms. Specifically, we ask the board to [your ask, for example: direct the superintendent to report on average daily screen time by grade and bring a draft policy on device use in grades K-5 to the policy committee by [month]].

We're not against technology. We believe it should be taught as a subject, and used when it clearly helps learning, while paper, books, and handwriting stay the default for core subjects.

Other Oregon districts are already doing this work. [Example: Lake Oswego completed a districtwide screen-time audit, and Tigard-Tualatin convened a work group with parents and teachers.] We'd welcome a similar process here, and we'd be glad to help.

Any policy should fully protect assistive technology and IEP and 504 accommodations.

I've attached a one-page research summary. Could we schedule a short meeting or phone call with [a board member / the policy committee chair] to talk about next steps?

Thank you for your time and your service to our students.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
