Letter to a teacher or principal

When to use this

This is a first conversation, not a demand. The goal is to understand what's happening and build a relationship. Start with the teacher; go to the principal if the answers depend on school or district decisions.

Subject: Question about technology in [child's name]'s class

Dear [Mr./Ms./Mx. Name],

Thank you for everything you do for [child's name] and the class. [One specific, genuine thank-you, for example: She loves the read-alouds and talks about them at dinner.]

I'm trying to understand how devices are used during the school day so I can support [child's name] at home. Would you be willing to share a little about the following?

About how much time students spend on devices in a typical day or week

Which programs or apps are used for reading, writing, and math

Whether device time is something you choose, or something the school or district requires

Whether any paper-based options are available for classwork or homework

I know many decisions about technology are made above the classroom level, and I'm not looking to add to your workload. I'd just like to understand, and to know how I can help.

If it's easier to talk, I'm happy to meet for 15 minutes at a time that works for you.

Warmly,

[Your name]

If you're writing to the principal instead

  • Add one line after the questions: "I'd also like to know whether device use in [grade] is set by the school or by the district, and who I should talk with about it."
